Kenya
Kenya’s opposition has suspended its weekly demonstrations against the country’s electoral body IEBC. The Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) said on Wednesday that the move was made to pave way for dialogue.
The coalition leaders told the press that they would instead spend their time next week to pursue peace and justice through prayers and comfort victims of previous protests. They have however said that they will return to the streets if Kenya’s Jubilee government fails to respond to their demands by June 5.
The protests had entered their fourth week on Monday, where three people died and scores injured in various cities across the country.
Police in the country have been put on the spot for using excessive force in containing the riots.
Kenya’s opposition wants the polls body disbanded before the 2017 general election. The body, which oversaw the 2013 disputed polls is being accused of plotting to rig the election in favour of the ruling Jubilee coalition.
